We might not hear much of it in our Australian news, Baltimore has been in the talk of the United States news. Since Monday, riots have broken out all over the city, but the has not deterred the 2015 Food Safety Summit from commencing on Tuesday.
The violent riots broke out on Monday afternoon, after the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who was arrested on April the 12th for carrying a switchblade knife. After a rather violent arrest and, Grey died a week later from injuries to his spinal cord and larynx.
The Food Safety Summit was held in the Baltimore Convention Center. In order to ensure the safety of the member and visitors attending the convention, security levels were increased. But not only was this done for the centre but also for the hotels. The organisers were also in close contact with the mayr’s office and city officials who are monitoring the situation.
During the first day of the summit, everything went as planned with a talk from the Deputy Commissioner for Foods and Veterinary Medicine at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) addressing the vision of integrated food safety systems. Even though some scheduled speakers cancelled their sessions, the summit continued on! There were even jokes made, one of the organisers said the few speaker cancellations allowed for the afternoon’s networking mixer to begin an hour early.
