Youth Not Well Versed In Food Safety

A recent research that was conducted by the Food Safety Information Council in Australia discovered that people under the age of 34 do not know the proper handling methods for food. This leaves them susceptible to food poisoning!

How was this done? The Food Safety Information Council created a survey for people to take and the results came as it of a shock. 18 to 34-year-olds didn’t do as well compared to over 50s on knowledge of food safety!

Some of the results include;

  • 73% of the 18 – 34-year-olds knew that a hamburger needed to be fully cooked as opposed to the 84% of over 50s that knew this fact
  • The younger group of survey participants that knew sausages on the BBQ had to be fully cooked was 87%. However, over 50s proved to be the masters of the grill – 93% knew the importance of a fully cooked sausage
  • About half (59%) of the younger group know to refrigerate chicken dishes straight away compared with 72% of over 50s

From this survey, it helps us understand where the source of food poisoning might come from. Though food poisoning cases have decreased from 4.3 million in 2000 to 4.1 million in 2010, the number of cases is still alarmingly high. We need to continue educating the younger people about the right ways to deal with food to keep everyone safe from food borne illnesses.
