Deceivingly Salty Foods

Everyone loves a bit of salty food – especially during the cold snap that has hit the Sydney suburbs. But some of the foods we eat might be unexpectedly saltier than you initially think.

Top 16 Surprisingly Salty Foods

The subtitle is self-explanatory – the following is a list of foods that are secretly salty;

  • Delicatessen meats (ham, salami, prosciutto, etc.)
  • Breakfast cereals (e.g. Special K, Corn Flakes, Coco Pops)
  • Tomato sauce
  • Soy sauce and Asian stir fry sauces
  • Vegetable or meat stocks
  • Canned vegetables and legumes
  • Pasta sauce
  • Bread
  • Baked goods (muffins, cake, doughnuts, etc.)
  • Soup
  • Veggie burger patties
  • Cheese (feta, halloumi, processed cheeses, etc.)
  • Vegetable juice
  • Frozen meals
  • Wraps and bagels
  • Instant noodles

Some of these foods in itself are not bad. It is when you buy pre-made versions of these foods that can cause the salt issue. The solution? Here are some tips to reduce the salt intake;

  1. Read food labels – looking at the per 100g column, search for products that have less than 120 mg per 100 gram

  2. Buy fresh products – do not get packaged foods, opt for the fresh fruit and vegetables

  3. Limit highly processes products – instant meals and sauces should be avoided!

  4. Pick frozen food – tinned food has a higher salt content to keep the food fresh

  5. slowly reduce the amount of salt you add to meals – a pretty obvious step…

Have you got any more ideas to live a more salt-free life? Has the two lists changed your attitudes towards salt?
