Food Additives Safety: What Not To Use

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) completed a study recently and in order to promote food additives safety, they listed a dozen additives that consumers should avoid. As many know, our food production process relies too strongly on additives but there are some that cause more harm than others. The EWG listed the following as highly dangerous;

  • Nitrates and nitrites
  • Potassium bromate
  • Propyl paraben
  • Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
  • Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
  • Propyl gallate
  • Theobromine
  • Secret flavour ingredients
  • Artificial colors
  • Diacetyl
  • Phosphates
  • Aluminum additives

From their report, EWG implores consumers to avoid these chemicals, not only because by avoiding them, it could improve one’s overall diet. The EWG hopes that this report would spark the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) attention. EWG argues that companies shouldn’t be allowed to certify the safety of their own ingredients and wants consumers to urge FDA to strengthen its regulatory system for food additives.
