A Coconut Milk Problem

Perceived as the healthier and tastier alternative to milk, the bad news affecting coconut milk will cause much distress to its many fans. New Zealand’s Ministry For Primary Industries (MPI) has announced that people – especially those with a milk allergy – should avoid drinking coconut milk.

The MPI has found that imported coconut milk may contain milk or milk products that are not clearly labelled on the packaging. Under the laws made by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) state that all products with the presence of milk or milk products must labelled so. Of course, this may cause a lot of trouble for those that have milk allergies or intolerance.

Since last year, there has been two reported case in Australia where the victim suffered severe allergic (anaphylactic) reactions associated with the consumption of coconut milk drinks. New Zealand fears that theses products are still on supermarket shelves. They implore consumers, especially those that are allergic or intolerant to lactose, to exercise caution when purchasing coconut milk.

This point made by the New Zealand officials can be easily applied to any Australian consumer. Do you need to be more careful with the coconut milk you purchase? Should you just substitute coconut milk with something else?
