Is There A World Food Safety Day On The Horizon?

Food safety is very important for the safety of humanity. It is an issue that affects people all over the world. And because of that, the United Nations have drafted a special day in the future to mark as World Food Safety Day.

What organisation is pushing for this?

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) is the official organisation of the United Nations that focuses on food and agriculture. They seek to do three things:

  • The eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition

  • The elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all

  • The sustainable management and utilization of natural resources

The aim of World Food Safety Day will be to raise awareness of how dangerous foodborne diseases are. This in turn will hopefully encourage governments, the food industry and individuals to do more to make food safe and prevent these disease.

In 2015, food safety was the topic of the United Nation’s World Health Day. But the FAO believe that more can be done about informing the public about safe food. Hopefully, the World Food Safety Day will reach the appropriate stakeholder. This include the public and private sectors and all actors in the food chain, from primary producers to consumers.

Do you think the FAO’s move will inform more people about proper food handling methods? And what else can be done to help improve the infrmation?
